Ottawa And Area Neighbourhoods
Full Details
Greely's rural atmosphere and its easy access to the City have contributed to making it the fastest growing community in the Ottawa area over the last thirty years. Greely has seen a 58.7% increase in the number of dwellings in the last 8 years alone. Furthermore, Greely presently has several large areas of undeveloped land within its boundaries, which contain enough land for approximately twenty-two years of residential growth based on current development patterns. Assuming that current patterns continue, Greely could have a population of approximately 9,000 to 10,000 in the next few years.
Greely is the proud home to a group of tight-knit and unique communities within the village. Most homes sit on ½ acre to 2-acre lots, surrounded by mature trees, or even woodland. Some neighbourhoods like Sunset Lakes offer amenities such as pools, tennis courts, man-made lakes, beaches, and small neighbourhood community centres within their residential core. The Greely Community Centre hosts meetings and activities for the entire rural area. A Winter Carnival and a renowned Canada Day celebration are just some of the community-oriented activities organized by various community groups in collaboration with the Community Centre. In 2009, the community secured funding for a brand new 3,500-square-foot library, which was built as an extension to the Greely Community Centre, the new facility opened in March, 201l.
Since amalgamation with the city of Ottawa in 2001, Greely is currently the largest rural village in terms of land area and the third largest in terms of population in the City of Ottawa. In 2005, its population was reported as 7,056, with 2,378 dwellings.
Although Greely has not officially had a ”main street” and village centre with shopping and amenities, a new commercial development, Greely Village Centre hopes to address the problem by creating a place where Greely residents can go to shop, work, and play instead of commuting into Ottawa. The implementation of the Greely Village Centre will help act as a main street and define Greely’s village core with a clear focus, a distinct identity, and a mixture of commercial, residential and institutional uses.
This peaceful suburban area has many golf courses, equestrian centres, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, outdoor rinks, and green-space, and has a deeply rooted, family oriented community spirit. The homes are unique, not cookie-cutter, and maintain the country flavour. The spacious rural lots perpetuate the peaceful flow, while allowing privacy and room to grow.
Greely is an idyllic place to raise a family and unwind from the hustle and bustle of the city.
